    Universal sense of time?
    « on: January 18, 2014, 05:29:55 PM »
Hey, I've always been wondering why, for example, when there is an awkward pause in a conversation, two or more people suddenly speak at one time. Is this because our universe has a "tick" system like RuneScape? Leave your opinions below :)

Confirmation bias. You don't think about it when it doesn't happen, so you fool yourself to think it always happens.

"Oh this conversation has paused, I had better say something to avoid awkwardness."

    Both people think that.

    Both people think that.

But the fact that they speak at the same time.

Are you making a statement or asking a question? I don't understand the meaning of your post.

Most people in a community will have a similar perception of the length of time in which a conversational pause becomes awkward, and so they will endeavour to say something before that amount of time is reached to avoid feeling awkward.

Look into synchronicity. I personally am very skeptical, but it is basically what you are talking about. Carl Jung is a good person to read up on.

The frontal lobe of the brain is sent a nerve that controls involuntary thinking. The natural response of the human brain is to avoid such moments, it's actually something like second nature if you will. The brain then has to adapt to the situation, therefore blabbering out random information to keep it going.
