`node` should be called Node and make it a static inner class (instead of non static)

if you want to share packet structure between server and client, you definitely want to use Google Protobuffers (or one of the many open source spinoffs like Msgpack, capnproto, Facebook Thrift)

It's only right for Java to allow switch statements with Strings because it does have good support for Strings unlike languages such as C++ that don't support String's as a type.
Java is doing good with it's life
I think they took a step in the wrong direction with lambdas, but that's a story for another day; not that Java shouldn't have lambdas, but it could have been implemented better.
I actually think they did a really good job with lambdas considering they added it in 20 years after the language's inception without breaking backwards compatibility. What don't you like about it?

if you're going to do a lot of allocations at once that will be freed together, consider using an arena / memory pool (malloc one huge chunk)

python sucks because:
python 2 vs 3 can be a pain
requiring a self argument. the whole oop in python feels like a huge hack
global namespace cluttering: want to name a variable "len" or "filter"? too bad, they're global functions and you'll get a retarded error if you forget this
python devs seem to think it's the only programming language. why the arse is something called "easyinstall"? there's no indication that this has anything to do with python. this is true for basically anything python related. instead ruby calls it gem, at least it's easy to relate. and instead of "virtualenv" ruby has "rvm", again much clearer
