[RESOLVED - DENIED]Revision-organised private server section
    « on: December 09, 2014, 09:40:21 PM »
I know most people hate a shit load of different subforums. But private servers seem to be like 7 years behind. I don't see it happening but just want to discuss this:

What about a different subforum for every major revision? That way development, tutorials and downloads won't be such a clusterfudge. Much more organisation might (who knows) motivate/create incentive to fill in the gaps. It's hard to see what's available because search features on forums are crap and Google only shows so much unless you have leet keyword skills.

Pro coder: ohh, the 474 section is empty. I'm gonna fill it.

    Something like:

      RuneScape 2 Development
        Server and Client Development Showoff
          RSC
          194
          289
          317
          377
          459
          474
          489
          508
          562
          614
          637
          718
          ...
        General Server Discussion
        Downloads
          Server and Client Development Showoff
            RSC
            194
            289
            317
            377
            459
            474
            489
            508
            562
            614
            637
            718
            ...
          Server Help
          Server Tutorials
            Featured Tutorials
            Snippets
          Client Hacking
            Server and Client Development Showoff
              RSC
              194
              289
              317
              377
              459
              474
              489
              508
              562
              614
              637
              718
              ...

At least then when you are looking for something you can find it. There are so many deobs being released nowadays but so little information (or so much in one place it's hard to notice it) that it just is impossible to see what is lacking, and difficult to find specific bases amongst the ocean of PI and Matrix.

It would enhance the experience of private server development and potentially create activity if players knew there were voids to fill. Just an idea, I have no idea if this is a good one or not but it would be something I would do if I had a popular forum.

Lastly, I understand the rswiki is there, but no one uses it because it's too obsolete. People only really look at the boards. Which is a shame because I went looking for information on the wiki and it wasn't there. Fuse the wiki to the boards because it's what everyone sees.

    Even source specific boards:

    *PI
    *Hyperion
    *Apollo
    *Matrix
    *Dementhium
    *Dodian
    *Allstar
    *Miscellaneous

I can never find anything I am looking for.

hell no for all those revisions, literally the worst idea ever

we had this talk before and I think the agreement was that if this type of thing was going to happen it'd be more like 317-500, 500+, and RS3 (not those exact revisions but that general idea, grouping them up by 'era')

    What about

    317/377
    459/474
    508/562
    614/639
    718+

Because even a mixture of 317 and 474 is bad enough. Source specific boards would be a better idea though maybe, because PI can be pushed a side and other sources can get a look in. This would limit the amount of subforums needed. What would it be the worst idea ever? Too much empty space?

I think it should kind of be like a prawns website where you can have multiple categories. For example, maybe you're sinisoul for the day (<3) and decide to watch something gay (317-377), but want to throw some incest in there (Client-related), so you combine that category. Finally you're looking for downloads, so you add big dicks, and now you're browsing for 317-377 client downloads. This way, you can view any group of things while preventing the forum from looking dead and bloated.

Also, shots fired. Sorry sinisoul, I had to because you're the only member off the top of my head who hates me for some reason. Inb4 brony comment, even though I'm not a brony. :P

That sounds like either multireddit or a tag system where you can browse by tag(s)

Why not just add a RS3 section (like 718+ or w/e)?
So RS2 and RS3 can be separated like RSC and RS2 are.

The RS2 section is so crowded. If that was even broken up into 3-4 categories just for the RS2 section, it would be nice.

If we ever did any type of subcategories. It should only append to the client (rework client hacking section pls) section of the forums. Servers are not limited to a certain revisions.

The only reason I would ever vote on a specific category in the server sections would be if there was a open source api to develope. Or perhaps a section for 'plugins'to the official mscp server.

Half the revisions you listed only contain 1-3 different frameworks.

However it would be nice for a prefix of sorts, or a simple tag cloud.

Yeah tagging is a nice idea. I see it's impractical to add so many revision subforums but it was just the initial idea. The problem for me, was wading through all the crap to find what you are looking for. It's too mixed at the moment and just feels messy (to me).

I know I am just one person, but the RS2 section is the largest of them all and all the information from 194-503 is too much for just one category. 317 and 377 take up a lot, so they would suit their own category. 459-503 would probably make up another great chunk. Then you got all the 639 and 718 servers which take up another considerable amount.

I think these should be the main 3 categories.

Subcategories is stupid simply because you can't find what you're looking for.

Yup. People will post in the wrong sections constantly (its a 373 LOADING 508 items, so I posted it in 500+!!!), it makes it harder to search, and it will make the index look ugly.

Dilutes the forum too far and there arent that many posts anyway relevant to RSPS work besides General Discussion.

Has it ever been tried? It's very well saying it won't work, people will post in the wrong section, "it's stupid". But if it hasn't been tried then that is hearsay. Make rules just like any other board. People still post help topics in the download section anyway.

I can see both pros and cons from both perspectives. I can also understand that some people don't see a problem in the first place so don't fix it type of mentality. That's fair enough. It's just personally I was having a problem and this seemed to be a bit more organised for me. I wanted to know if there was anyone else who felt the same way. I don't really know the pros and cons which is why I wanted a discussion about it.

What about what I said, having just 3 main revision subforums?

Or a section which organises downloads/tutorials by base/source type instead. We have lists but they are hard to maintain as they get out dated with dead links fast.

With the 'lets just try it to find out' mentality, we'll end up with something like the frontpage blog again. Sometimes you just have to realize people know what they are talking about because they've been here for a long time and know how the community works. That's why we evaluate suggestions and don't just do whatever anyone suggests because it "wont hurt to try it". And yes, people post help topics in the download section, which is why I know this will just make the problem worse. And by the way, this doesn't mean I am completely nixing the idea, as you've seen I have posted some ideas as well, Im just pointing out the "just try it" mentality is completely wrong.

If people want to organize by base/source, it's not hard to use the search feature and limit to searching the download section.

PS, the three subforums wasnt your idea :|

The main problem, as David stated.

Take this server for instance, https://forum.moparscape.org/index.php/topic,602096.0.html/

You will have some people classifying it as a 317 while others will classify it as a 600-700 due to hard coding higher revision models.

We don't need different sections for all these *copies*

If you want, make your own site with the different sections and see if you can pull in some adsense

Mmm, I mean. I dont know about combining those two sections. They're vastly different enough but it might be good seeing as activity is dropping across the board.
