What's the current status of RuneScape Classic?
    « on: August 17, 2015, 02:31:10 PM »
    Hey,

I'm an old fan of RSC from about 15 years ago, and I've recently discovered this little community. I'm just trying to gauge where things stand currently. From what I can gather, a handful of people are still around, and there are lots of different servers floating around, all with their own unique features, generally ones that try to liven the game up a bit with faster XP gain and an emphasis on PvP and clans. Does this sound about right?

Most of the links I've found are dead, but I did manage to find a copy of the source code for EasyRSC's client and server. There were a few problems with it, but I finally managed to get it up and running for myself. It looks pretty true to the original game, with a few odd features added and a new login screen, etc.

I've been trying to work out where the source code has actually come from. A lot of it looks like it has been decompiled due to the lack of comments and variable names. And since a lot of functionality is missing from the server, presumably much of the source was obtained from an early version, and it's been added to over the years in an attempt to bring it more in line with the official servers?

Anyway, I'm just curious - does anyone still play RSC? What servers do people generally play on? And what features do you look for in a server?

Personally I'm trying to bring this source code back to a more vanilla state, but that's mainly just for personal use.

    Cheers,
    Danjb

Well if you have seen the server advertisement recently, you would know.
RSC Update: JMods still lack interest. Lots and lots of debating.

Ok, I guess it wasn't quite 15 years ago since the game (according to Wikipedia) was released in 2001. I joined pretty close to the start. That's not really the point of this thread, though.

By rsc if you mean the official servers? Since jagex kind of locked them up i cant imagine too much activity there, not to mention that bots are free to roam about over there.

As for here? I think theres a few servers still going good but dont take my word for it, though one thing i have noticed is that theres alot of bad blood between servers/suspicious ownership of servers

Yeah, I got that vibe from some of the posts I've read.
So maybe there are still a few private servers, but it sounds like most of the RSC scene has died.

In that case - what were some of the better features of private servers back when RSC was popular? I doubt I'll ever host a public server since it's probably quite expensive, but I'd be interested to hear what works well and what doesn't. I expect I'll keep tinkering with the source for a while, maybe make it a bit more fun to play over a LAN. So far I've just added support for high-resolutions and done some tidying of the code.

EDIT: Also, can someone please explain to me a bit about the different client/server revisions? I've noticed people referring to them by numbers but I don't know what each revision adds. I also have no idea which revision I've downloaded. It seems to contain thieving, not sure about herblaw and agility, and most quests aren't implemented... are there revisions available where these things have been implemented?

well hosting a server isnt too expensive actually, i dont do rsc, i do rs2, and even for that its not too expensive provided youre not one of the big shot servers with 1k+ players, and im sure thats more intensive than rsc. Over time you kind of just memorize landmark revisions, at least thats how it was for me in rs2 (194, 289, 317, 377, 414, 453, 459, 474, 498, 508, 525, etc.) They are usually better/well known not because they have some game changing update (some do) but because there is some knowledge on it and a decent cache dump for the revision for models and so on so forth

mona lisa never adds any value in his posts because he simply is not able to LOL  :P

    on Topic:

you can Play real RSC on 3 Servers
with a Population of ~200 Players.
i would estimate that 95% of Players are botting.
    pking is non existent,
staking is the Name of the game.
    the community is tiny and
for a Long time dying.  :(

Thanks for the explanation. Is there a summary somewhere of all the major revisions?

I guess it's kind of inevitable that a community such as this would die after all these years. RSC is pretty old and obscure these days. Kudos to you guys for keeping it alive so long, though.

    So much nostalgia :')

Welcome... well the client is decompiled and almost every private server comes from the leaked source of rscdaemon that was made by Reines author of skulltorcha (an old rsc bot) and that's about it. The 6-7 years after that to this day there's a lot of server admins fights, ddos, scamming, leeching, death etc.

here are the protocols and stuff

    updated source

    hope it helps :)

    Thanks guys!

I'll definitely check out that updated source, maybe I can somehow merge it with my own.

EDIT: Is that the source code for just the server? Which client should I use?
