Given you're using Apache and have mod_rewrite.

Is this actually good for SEO?

Yeah it is good for SEO, search engines (admittedly not Google or Bing, but some smaller ones) can see www.mysite.com and mysite.com as different sites so the rankings are half what they should be

Not for Google. Google don't care about this shit! The OP probably uses babylon.

Edit: I was too slow at replying :(

Yeah, Google, Bing etc all don't care but there are people in the world who still use Ask Jeeves

Anyone who knows anything about SEO knows it's a pain in the arse so something as simple as this isn't to be sniffed at just because the larger search engines don't take it into account

Plus this section is fudgeing dead so its good to have a breath of fresh air now and again

It can also solve some cookie bugs, I've found. Before, cookies would be stored differently for www.mysite.com and mysite.com.
